Sustainable Quiltmaking: A Global and Historical Perspective
Sustainable Quiltmaking: A Global and Historical Perspective
Every year, students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Japan’s Saitama University collaborate to create an International Quilt Museum exhibition based on what they have learned together about global quilt traditions, but also informed by their own cultural roots and understandings. This year, the students examine quilt and patchwork traditions from around the world that exhibit deep connections to the ideas of frugality, recycling, and sustainability. From multi-patched Japanese “boro” textiles to Indian “ralli” quilts made from layers of recycled clothing to American quilts made during the Great Depression from recycled feed sacks, the students will present the diverse history of making quilts and patchwork from a place of need, respect for the materials, and a desire to act sustainably for the benefit of our planet.
