The Kansas City Star newspaper published the Ararat pattern in 1931 to commemorate an elephant that lived in the Swope Park Zoo in Kansas City. Readers presumed this was a political representation of the GOP elephant however, and requested a pattern for a Democratic donkey. Three weeks later, the design for Giddap was published, described by The Star as a "very democratic donkey."
