Bridget Long, guest curator of "Quilts of Emotion", and Jim Kohler, a lifelong hand-quilter will discuss how quilting in both social and solitary settings provides quiltmakers with emotional space for solace and contemplation and to form social bonds with others.
Bridget Long, an expert on British patchwork and quilting in the 1700s, will share women’s remarks from their diaries and oral histories about the range of emotional aspects of their sewing.
Jim Kohler, an anthropologist, hand-quilter, and IQM volunteer, will tell about coming to know an unknown quiltmaker from the late 1800s by hand-quilting her quilt top at the IQM while visitors stopped to observe and socialize.
Long and Kohler’s conversation will layer personal experiences with historical documentation, real social interactions around a quilt frame with private thoughts and feelings that form to the rhythm of individual stitches.
A recording of the program will be available on our Facebook and YouTube channels the following Monday.
