Cotton; machine pieced and quilted
Modern Quilt Collection, Gift of the Robert and Ardis James Foundation, IQM 2021.039.0001
Kim Soper made her “Lincoln” quilt based on artwork by WPAP artist, Ihsan Ekaputra (WPAP is a form of pop art portraiture done in a distinctly angular, boldly colored style). In recreating Ekaputra’s Abraham Lincoln, Soper used neither paper piecing nor appliqué, which are usual choices for complex images. Instead, she machine pieced it in intricate units, sometimes using narrow slivers of fabric. You can read more about her creative process here. In 2017, “Lincoln” won the People’s Choice and First Place Improvisation awards at QuiltCon, and in 2019 it joined the IQM collection. It is part of the Modern Meets Modern exhibition, on view until March 19 in the West Gallery.
